QuiltingB's Quilting Patterns - Courthouse Steps
Although I could provide templates for the various pieces, I have decided instead to provide size measurements and cutting instructions. This is because of the differences in computer screen resulutions and printer settings. By providing these measurments and cutting instructions, you can be sure that your pieces will be the proper size and scale. If you prefer to use templates, simply follow these measurement instructions, cutting out pieces of paper and transfer that to template plastic.
1. Cut the following pieces.
Center square Cut 1 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 inches
Strip A1 Cut 2 2 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip B1 Cut 2 4 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip A2 Cut 2 4 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip B2 Cut 2 6 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip A3 Cut 2 6 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip B3 Cut 2 8 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip A4 Cut 2 8 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip B4 Cut 2 10 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip A5 Cut 2 10 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
Strip B5 Cut 2 12 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches
It doesn't matter what colors you use, but there should be a contrast
between the A strips and the B strips.
You create each quilt block by sewing the strips together in the following order:
- Sew A1 strips to center square:

- Add B1 strips to long side:

- Add A2 strips:

- Add B2 strips:

- Add A3 strips:

- Add B3 strips:

- Add A4 strips:

- Add B4 strips:

- Add A5 strips:

- Add B5 strips:

You can then assemble these quilt blocks together in interesting patterns, especially if you make groups of contrasting colored courthouse blocks.
